We carefully select the best elements from each dessert: the robust espresso-soaked, delicately vanilla ladyfingers and the rich, sweet “mascarpone” cream from tiramisu. From banana pudding, we embrace the natural sweetness of fresh bananas, the velvety texture of a homemade vanilla pudding, and the cloud-like lightness of whipped cream. By bringing these distinct yet complementary components together, we forge an entirely new dessert. The outcome is a symphony of flavors: subtle notes of robust espresso and deep cocoa harmonizing with the vibrant sweetness of fresh banana, all enveloped in a creamy, buttery vanilla embrace. This layered dessert is served chilled, offering a wonderfully spoonable delight that melts in your mouth.

The Four Essential Components of This Unique Tiramisu

Let’s delve deeper into the foundational elements that construct this exquisite vegan banana pudding tiramisu. This magnificent dessert is built upon four primary components, each contributing its unique character to the overall experience:

  • Homemade Vegan Ladyfingers: These delicate sponge cakes are surprisingly simple to prepare from scratch. Achieving that distinctive savoiardi shape doesn’t even require special molds! For those requiring a gluten-free option, a 1-to-1 gluten-free baking flour (such as King Arthur Measure for Measure) can be seamlessly substituted without compromising texture or flavor.
  • From-Scratch Vegan Vanilla “Mascarpone” Pudding: This creamy core layer is crafted from a thoughtful blend of dairy-free milk, dairy-free yogurt (which imparts that essential tangy depth reminiscent of mascarpone), granulated sugar, cornstarch for thickening, a touch of rich vegan butter, and aromatic vanilla extract. Creating your own pudding from basic ingredients is just as straightforward as using a store-bought mix, but the superior flavor and texture are undeniably worth the minimal extra effort.
  • Perfectly Fresh Bananas: Unlike recipes for banana bread where overripe bananas are ideal, this tiramisu calls for fresh, firm, yet ripe bananas. Their natural sweetness and slightly firm texture provide a beautiful contrast to the soft layers, ensuring they don’t become mushy when chilled.
  • Cloud-like Vegan Whipped Cream: This airy topping is also prepared in your kitchen using cold heavy vegan cream (brands like Califa or Plant Crock are excellent choices), a whisper of sugar, and a hint of cornstarch to stabilize its beautiful peaks. The process mirrors that of traditional whipped cream, resulting in a light and fluffy finish. To elevate the presentation and taste, the assembled tiramisu is elegantly dusted with a layer of cocoa powder (a nod to classic tiramisu) and garnished with additional fresh banana slices and crumbled vegan vanilla wafers.

Crafting Your Homemade Vegan Ladyfingers

While the prospect of making ladyfingers from scratch might initially seem daunting, especially since most store-bought varieties are not vegan (due to unfortunately containing eggs, as noted by DeLallo Savoiardi Ladyfingers), I assure you the process is remarkably simple and deeply rewarding. This recipe is lovingly adapted from my great-grandpa’s classic, carefully transformed to be entirely dairy-free and vegan-friendly.

The method is genuinely straightforward. You’ll begin by whisking together all the dry ingredients, setting them aside to prepare for the wet components. If you’ve ever mastered a meringue, you’ll find this process quite familiar. The key is whipping aquafaba (the magical brine from chickpeas) with cream of tartar until soft peaks form, then gradually incorporating the sugar. Following this, the remaining wet ingredients are gently folded in. Finally, the dry mixture is sifted into the wet in small increments, folding just until everything is combined and a light, airy batter is achieved.

Once your batter is ready, it’s piped onto a prepared baking sheet, dusted with a delicate layer of powdered sugar, and baked for a mere 12 minutes until lightly golden and perfectly tender. These homemade ladyfingers are truly the backbone of our vegan banana pudding tiramisu, absorbing the espresso beautifully and contributing to its delightful structure and flavor.

Step-by-Step Assembly Guide for Banana Pudding Tiramisu

Creating this magnificent dessert is a layered process, much like an artistic composition. Follow these steps for a perfect outcome, referring to the visual cues in the accompanying images:

vanilla pudding being made
After baking your exquisite ladyfingers, direct your attention to preparing the rich vanilla pudding. Begin by whisking all the pudding ingredients together in a large pot before applying any heat, ensuring a smooth, lump-free mixture.
cooked vegan vanilla pudding
Gently cook the pudding mixture on the stovetop over medium heat, stirring continuously to prevent scorching. As it gradually thickens to a luxurious consistency, remove it from the heat and stir in the cold vegan butter until it’s completely melted and incorporated. Set this creamy pudding aside to cool slightly while you prepare for the assembly of your banana pudding tiramisu.
soaked ladyfinger in espresso
Once all your components are ready, the exciting assembly phase begins. Start by gently dipping a ladyfinger into a shallow dish of freshly brewed espresso, ensuring it is thoroughly, yet quickly, soaked on both sides. Avoid over-soaking to maintain its structural integrity.
first layer
Carefully arrange the espresso-soaked ladyfingers in a single, even layer at the bottom of your 8×8 baking pan. Repeat this process until the entire base of the pan is covered with these delightful, coffee-infused biscuits.

Next, carefully spoon half of your luscious vanilla “mascarpone” pudding mixture over the layer of ladyfingers. Use an offset spatula or the back of a spoon to gently spread it evenly, ensuring every ladyfinger is generously coated.
assembling the banana pudding tiramisu
Conclude this layer by arranging an even blanket of freshly sliced banana coins over the vanilla pudding. Ensure good coverage, as these bananas contribute significantly to the dessert’s signature flavor and moisture.
assembling the banana pudding tiramisu
Repeat the layering process one more time: a second layer of espresso-soaked ladyfingers followed by the remaining half of the vanilla “mascarpone” pudding. However, critically, do NOT add the second layer of banana slices at this stage. Instead, tightly cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for a minimum of 4 hours, or ideally, overnight. This chilling period is crucial for the flavors to meld and the tiramisu to set properly.
assembling the banana pudding
Just before you are ready to serve this delightful creation, retrieve the chilled banana pudding tiramisu from the refrigerator. Now is the time to artfully arrange the second layer of fresh banana slices on top of the set pudding. Finish by spreading a generous, cloud-like layer of freshly whipped vegan cream over the bananas.

For the grand finale, dust the entire surface generously with cocoa powder, sprinkle with crumbled vegan vanilla wafers for added texture, and arrange a few more fresh banana slices for a vibrant garnish. These final touches not only enhance the visual appeal but also contribute to the complex flavor profile.

With all the elements perfectly in place, your magnificent vegan banana pudding tiramisu is ready to be admired, sliced into generous portions, and thoroughly enjoyed. Prepare for an unforgettable dessert experience!

Expert Tips for a Flawless Dessert

Achieving perfection with your vegan banana pudding tiramisu is simple with a few key considerations. Here are some expert tips to ensure your dessert is an absolute triumph:

  • Prepare Ladyfingers in Advance: My most significant recommendation is to make the vegan ladyfingers a day ahead. This foresight allows them to dry out slightly, which is crucial. Drier ladyfingers have a greater capacity to soak up the espresso, leading to a more intensely flavored and perfectly moist dessert without becoming soggy.
  • Divide and Conquer: Tiramisu, with its multiple components, can sometimes feel overwhelming. To manage this, I strongly advise reading through the entire ingredient list and instructions thoroughly before you begin. Mentally preparing for each stage of the recipe will help you feel more organized and less flustered during the preparation process.
  • Embrace Store-Bought Whipped Cream (Optional): There is absolutely no shame in utilizing high-quality store-bought components to streamline your dessert-making process. If you’re short on time or prefer a convenient option, a good vegan frozen whipped cream, such as So Delicious!, can be an excellent substitute for homemade, without sacrificing too much on taste or texture.
  • Strategic Banana Placement: As mentioned in the assembly steps, it’s imperative to hold off on adding the second layer of banana slices until just before serving. This critical timing prevents the bananas from browning due to oxidation during the several hours of chilling in the refrigerator. You will only assemble the first banana layer initially. The second, fresh layer, along with any extra garnish bananas, will be added right before the whipped cream topping when the dessert is almost ready to be enjoyed.
  • Vanilla Wafers – Your Choice: Traditional banana pudding often features vanilla wafers. You have the option to either bake your own vegan vanilla wafers or purchase suitable vegan varieties. However, if you happen to have any leftover homemade ladyfingers, crushing them and sprinkling them on top offers a fantastic, complementary texture and flavor, making for a resourceful and delicious alternative.
  • Quality Ingredients Matter: Since this dessert relies on fresh flavors, choose ripe, but not overly soft, bananas. Use good quality espresso for the ladyfinger soak, as its flavor will permeate the entire dessert. Similarly, using excellent dairy-free alternatives for the pudding and whipped cream will make a noticeable difference in richness and creaminess.
  • Proper Chilling for Optimal Flavor and Texture: Do not rush the chilling process. The 4-5 hours (or overnight) in the refrigerator are essential for the layers to set, the flavors to meld harmoniously, and the texture to reach its ideal, spoonable consistency. Patience truly pays off with tiramisu.

Description

The best of banana pudding and tiramisu combined, this unbelievably rich and creamy vegan banana pudding tiramisu is layered with homemade espresso-soaked ladyfingers, a from scratch creamy vanilla “mascarpone” pudding, fresh banana, and homemade vegan whipped cream. Then we finish with a dusting of cocoa powder, vanilla wafers, and more bananas! It’s the ultimate chilled summer treat!

Ingredients

Vegan Vanilla “Mascarpone” Pudding:

  • 3 cups (720 mL) unsweetened vanilla soy milk or almond milk
  • 1/2 cup (120 mL) unsweetened dairy free yogurt
  • 3/4 cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup + 1 tbsp (100 g) cornstarch or arrowroot starch
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp vanilla bean paste
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1/3 cup (78 g) vegan butter, cold

Vegan Ladyfingers:

  • 2 cups (250 grams) all purpose flour or sifted gluten-free 1-to-1 baking flour (if doing gluten-free, add in 1 tsp arrowroot powder)
  • 2 tbsp (20 g) cornstarch or arrowroot starch
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/8 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 cup (120 mL) aquafaba*
  • 3/4 cup (150 g) granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) dairy free yogurt or unsweetened applesauce, room temperature
  • 2 tbsp melted vegan butter or avocado oil, room temperature
  • 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp almond extract
  • 1/4 cup (30 g) powdered sugar

Vegan Whipped Cream:

  • 1 cup (240 mL) vegan heavy cream, cold
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tbsp cornstarch

Toppings & Assembly:

  • 3–4 large bananas
  • 1 cup brewed espresso (decaf if desired)
  • Crushed vegan vanilla wafers (see notes for gluten free)
  • Cocoa powder
  • Sliced banana

Instructions

  1. Prep: Begin by making the vegan ladyfingers, then proceed to the pudding, followed by the assembly of the banana tiramisu, and finally, the toppings. Measure all ladyfinger ingredients precisely. Preheat your oven to 390F (199C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Make the ladyfinger batter: Refer to the detailed instructions within this article for making and baking the vegan ladyfingers.
  3. Next, prepare the vanilla mascarpone pudding: In a large pot, without heat, combine the dairy-free milk, dairy-free yogurt, sugar, cornstarch, vanilla extract, vanilla bean paste, and sea salt. Whisk vigorously until the cornstarch is completely dissolved and no clumps remain. For easier mixing, you can first create a cornstarch “slurry” by mixing the cornstarch with 1 cup of the dairy-free milk before adding it to the other pudding ingredients.
  4. Heat and Thicken: Place the pot over medium heat and bring the vanilla pudding mixture to a gentle boil, stirring constantly. Once it begins to bubble, reduce the heat to medium-low and continue stirring. The pudding will progressively thicken, becoming noticeably more resistant to stirring (this usually takes about 5-7 minutes after heating begins). Once it reaches your desired thick consistency, remove the pot from the heat. Immediately stir in the cold vegan butter until it is completely melted and smoothly incorporated. Pour the pudding into a large bowl and set it aside to cool slightly while you prepare for assembly.
  5. Assembly Phase 1: Now, gather an 8×8 square baking dish, your prepared ladyfingers, the vanilla pudding, brewed espresso, and 2 large bananas. Take one ladyfinger, dip it briefly into the brewed espresso using a fork, ensuring it’s soaked on all sides without becoming waterlogged. Place it at the bottom of your baking pan. Repeat this process with approximately 10 ladyfingers to form a complete, single layer across the pan. Pour half of the vanilla pudding mixture over this ladyfinger layer and use an offset spatula to smooth it evenly. Finally, slice one banana into coins and arrange them neatly over the pudding layer. You might need slightly more than one banana for this initial layer.
  6. Repeat Layering & Chill: Repeat the layering process once more with another layer of espresso-soaked ladyfingers and the remaining vanilla pudding. Crucially, do NOT add the second banana layer at this point. This precaution prevents the bananas from browning due to oxidation during the chilling period. Once the pudding layer is smooth, cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap. Place the covered dish into the refrigerator to chill and set for 4-5 hours, or ideally, overnight, allowing the flavors to meld and the tiramisu to firm up.
  7. Prepare to Serve: Just before you plan to serve, prepare the vegan whipped cream. For best results, place the mixing bowl of a stand mixer (or a large bowl for a hand mixer) into the freezer for about 10 minutes beforehand. Ensure your heavy vegan cream is thoroughly chilled. Attach the whisk attachment to your stand mixer (or use a hand mixer) and pour in the cold heavy cream. Begin mixing on medium speed. After approximately 2 minutes, gradually add in the granulated sugar and the cornstarch (which helps stabilize the whipped cream and maintain its shape). Increase the speed to high and continue mixing for 3-5 minutes, or until you achieve beautiful, semi-stiff peaks. Be careful not to over-mix, as vegan creams can sometimes separate if whipped too long.
  8. Final Topping & Serve: Once the whipped cream is ready, remove the banana pudding tiramisu from the fridge and discard the plastic wrap. Slice the remaining banana(s) into coins and arrange them as the second layer on top of the chilled vanilla pudding. Then, spread the freshly made vegan whipped cream generously over the bananas. For the finishing touches, dust the entire surface with a fine layer of cocoa powder, sprinkle with crushed vegan vanilla wafers for a delightful crunch, and garnish with a few extra slices of fresh banana. Slice into individual portions and serve immediately to enjoy its exquisite freshness!
  9. Storage: Any leftover vegan banana pudding tiramisu should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will maintain its deliciousness for up to 4 days.

Notes

Aquafaba: This refers to the liquid found in a can or jar of chickpeas. It performs remarkably like egg whites and serves as an excellent, natural egg substitute in baking, providing lift and structure.

Vegan Gluten-Free Vanilla Wafers: If you’re seeking a vegan and gluten-free option for vanilla wafers, you can find a suitable recipe within the salted caramel vegan banana pudding recipe.
