  • 1 ¼ cup (270 mL) dairy-free milk, heated to warm (105-115°F / 40-46°C)
  • ⅓ cup (87 g) plain, unsweetened dairy-free yogurt, room temperature
  • ¼ cup (57 g) vegan butter, room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Chocolate Cream Cheese Filling:

  • ¼ cup (57 g) vegan butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup (226 g) vegan cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 cup (200 g) Florida Crystals® Organic Light Brown Raw Cane Sugar
  • ½ cup (50 g) cocoa powder, sifted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup shelled pistachios

Optional Glaze:

  • 1 cup (150 g) Florida Crystals® Organic Powdered Raw Cane Sugar
  • 3 tbsp dairy-free milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract or paste

Instructions

  1. Preparation & Important Notes: Please read through all instructions carefully before you begin. The overnight option and gluten-free substitution guidance can be found in the notes section below the recipe card.
  2. Initial Prep: Lightly grease a medium-sized bowl with olive oil or coconut oil and set it aside. Ensure that the vegan butter intended for the dough and filling is at room temperature – this is crucial for the texture.
  3. Warm the Dairy-Free Milk: In a small saucepan, gently heat the dairy-free milk until it is comfortably warm to the touch (ideally between 105-115°F or 40-46°C). It should not be above 115°F, as excessively hot milk can kill the yeast.
  4. Make the Dough: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment, or a large mixing bowl if kneading by hand, whisk together the bread flour (or all-purpose), Florida Crystals® Organic Light Brown Raw Cane Sugar, quick rise yeast, and sea salt. Add in the room-temperature dairy-free yogurt, warmed dairy-free milk, and vanilla extract. Mix on medium speed until the ingredients are just combined. Then, add the softened vegan butter and increase the speed to high (holding onto your stand mixer if it tends to move) for 10 minutes to thoroughly knead the dough. If kneading by hand, turn the dough out onto a lightly floured clean surface and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. First Proof (Rise): Lightly knead the dough for 2-4 minutes until it forms a smooth ball that is no longer sticky. Transfer the dough to the previously greased medium bowl, cover it tightly with a clean cloth or plastic wrap, and place it in a warm, draft-free area to rise for approximately 1 hour, or until it has visibly doubled in size. A warm spot could be an oven (turned OFF) with the oven light on, or near a preheating oven.
  6. While the Dough is Rising – Prepare Filling & Pistachios: Grease a large casserole or baking dish with oil and set it aside. Next, prepare the chocolate cream cheese filling: In a large bowl, using a hand mixer or stand mixer with a paddle attachment, cream together the room-temperature vegan butter and vegan cream cheese until light and fluffy. Add the Florida Crystals® Organic Light Brown Raw Cane Sugar, sifted cocoa powder, and vanilla extract. Mix again until the filling is smooth, creamy, and well combined. Set aside. For the pistachios, spread them evenly on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Toast in a preheated oven (typically 350°F / 175°C) for 5-6 minutes until fragrant. Remove from oven and let them cool completely.
  7. Assemble the Chocolate Sweet Rolls: Once the dough has completed its first rise, gently punch it down and turn it out onto a lightly floured clean surface.
